Welcome to Leadville! Elevation 10,151 feet

The next few weeks are busy ones for us here in Leadville, the eponymous city of our CBD brand, as visitors and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world ascend on our tiny mountain town. Since we aren’t an Airbnb and can’t house you all in our HQ, we still want to be good hosts and at least leave a list of activities for you while you’re in the area. What’s a trip to Leadville without at stop at the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum. Afterall, Leadville was built on the mines. First there was the brief gold rush of the mid nineteenth-century, followed closely by the silver boom. This preceded the discovery of Molybdenum, a crucial element used to harden steel during WWII, that resulted in the Climax mine, which was the world’s largest underground mine in 1980. Who knew?

If you’re legs aren’t completely cooked from racing bikes or running over mountain passes, then down a few extra CBD Gems and lace up your hiking boots, because Mt. Elbert is just a short drive out of town. At 14,440 feet, it’s the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains and the second highest mountain in the continental United States. Plan on about 8-10 hours to complete this 9 mile round trip hike. Watch out for that afternoon mountain weather! If it’s not storming right now, it will be in a few minutes.

Or if you want a mellower jaunt and want to literally get into the mountains, check out the abandoned Hagerman Tunnel above Turquoise Lake. It’s a moderate 7.5 mile hike that follows an old railroad grade through the abandoned ghost town of Douglass and into the mountains. Do we recommend you venture into the creepy old tunnel that spends most of the year buried under ice and is probably haunted by ghosts of pickaxe weidling miners? No.

Since there’s a good chance you’re here in Leadville with a bike, you might as well pedal around a few local spots that don’t involve climbing up Columbine. The Mineral Belt Trail is a 12 mile paved path that snakes its way around Leadville and is a fun spin for the whole family. There’s also a fun little bit of singletrack just outside of town located right off the Mineral Belt Trail and near Colorado Mountain College.

After all that activity, Leadville also offers the chance to sample beer at the world’s highest craft brewery. Our friends at Periodic Brewing serve an ever rotating selection of locally brewed favorites.
